Bring the fun of summer to your cardmaking with a playful interactive card featuring beach-themed patterned papers, a unique coloring technique, and a whimsical moving focal image. This handmade beach card combines the reverse spotlight technique with a Twist N’ Slide interactive element to create a card that’s full of movement and personality.

Select Coordinating Background Elements

One of my favorite ways to stretch my crafting supplies is by mixing patterned papers from the same collection. The Nantucket Sea Escape and Savanna Neutrals paper packs coordinate beautifully, making it easy to create layered card designs with plenty of interest and whimsy.

For this project, I also used the Beach Retreat Flashcards. These versatile flashcards come pre-printed with toner, allowing you to use them as-is or add shine by heat foiling them before incorporating them into your design.

Try the Reverse Spotlight Technique

Have you ever tried the reverse spotlight technique? Unlike traditional spotlight coloring, where only a portion of the image is colored, the reverse spotlight technique leaves the focal image area black and white while coloring everything around it.

To create this look, I masked the surfboards on the Beach Retreat Flashcards and then ink blended around them to add a colorful beach-inspired background. The contrast between the bright blended colors and the black-and-white surfboards creates a striking focal point that immediately draws the eye.

Next, I stamped the adorable pig from the Ham It Up Stamp Set and colored it with alcohol markers to bring even more personality to the scene.

Create an Interactive Focal Image

Let’s ham it up even more by making Piggy interactive!

I used an interactive die from my stash to create a track that allows the pig to move across the card. This system eliminates the need for the traditional penny-and-foam-tape method often used in interactive cardmaking.

To assemble:
– Die cut the slide track.
– Add foam dots around the track to create height and movement space.
– Insert one side of the slider mechanism into the track and snap the other piece into place.
– Adhere the completed panel to your card front.
– Attach the pig to the slider using a glue dot or liquid adhesive.

With just a gentle touch, Piggy can jump up and down the beach or even appear to do cartwheels across the sand!

Complete the Look with Embellishments

The finishing touches help bring this beach scene to life. I used New Penny Rhinestone Mix embellishments as decorative rocks scattered along the shoreline. To add realism and dimension, I applied a liquid gloss effect to the pig’s water wings, giving them a shiny, inflatable appearance. These small details help enhance the overall beach vibe while adding extra texture and visual interest.
