Looking for an easy handmade birthday card for the fisherman in your life? This masculine fishing card combines the adorable I Wanna Be like You stamp set with the sentiment from the Forever 29 Cake stamp set, Nantucket Sea Escape paper pack, and the Casted Net stencil to create a fun, personalized birthday card. Best of all, it shows how mixing products from different stamp sets helps you get even more value from your crafting supplies. One of my favorite ways to create cards quickly is to follow a simple card recipe. Breaking the design into easy recipe “steps” keeps me from overthinking the process and makes it easy to recreate the design for multiple occasions.

Step 1: Build the Card Foundation

I started with an A2 top-folding card base and added texture using an embossing folder from my stash. To create even more depth, I ink blended through the Casted Net stencil using a coordinating ink color. If you love creating beach, lake, or ocean-themed cards, this stencil is a must-have! Next, I selected several patterned papers from Nantucket Sea Escape paper pad, along with some from my stash. Layering narrow strips of patterned paper created the look of a weathered fishing dock and added lots of visual interest.

Step 2: Create the Focal Image

The adorable fisherman from I Wanna Be Like You stamp set immediately reminded me of my nephew, who loves spending time fishing. I stamped the image with alcohol marker-friendly ink before coloring it to coordinate with the colors in the Nantucket Sea Escape paper pack. Pro Tip: Choose your patterned paper before you begin coloring. Matching your marker to the paper is much easier than trying to find paper that coordinates an already colored image.

Step 3: Mix and Match Your Sentiments

Instead of using one of the sentiments included in the I Wanna Be Like You stamp set, I paired this card design with the “Happy Birthday” sentiment from the Forever 29 Cake stamp set. After stamping the sentiment, I used a punch from my stash to create the sentiment banner. Mixing sentiments from different stamp sets is one of my favorite ways to stretch my crafting stash. It gives me endless design possibilities while making the card feel customized for the recipient.

Step 4: Add the Finishing Touches

No handmade card feels complete without a few finishing details! I added white acrylic marker highlights to the stamped image for extra dimension. Then, I applied confetti form my stash and applied them with my Pajama Crafters’ Wand. Embellishments draw attention to both the focal image and the birthday sentiment.

Stretch Your Stash with Creative Mixing

Whenever you’re making a card for someone special think about the recipient’s hobbies and interest. Mixing images, sentiments, patterned papers and embellishments is an easy way to create a personalized card while getting even more use from the supplies that you have. I love being able to grab new stamp sets and mix them with things I already have to compliment them.

Whether you’re creating a birthday card for a fisherman, an outdoor enthusiast, or someone who simply loves spending time on the water, this stash-stretching card recipe is quick, fun, and easy to duplicate. I hope this project inspires you to mix, match, and stretch your craft stash while crating something truly special.
