Why Fun Fold Cards?

I’ve always been a fan of adding a bit of unexpected flair to my cards, and fun fold designs are the perfect way to do that. They offer a great way to make your cards stand out while still being simple enough to create without a lot of fuss. Plus, who doesn’t love a card that reveals a surprise when it’s opened?

Creating the Card Base

For this project, I started with a piece of Red Cardstock (from my stash) cut to 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and scored it at 4 1/4″ to create a standard A2-sized card base. I love using rich, festive colors like Cranberry red for holiday cards—it really sets the tone for what’s to come.

Next, I chose a lovely patterned paper with Cardinals and Christmas foliage (from my stash) to complement the rich red of the card base. I cut this to 4″ x 5 1/4″ and adhered it to the front of the card base. Patterned paper is such a great way to add instant visual interest to your cards, and there are so many beautiful designs out there to choose from!

Adding the Fun Fold

Here’s where the fun really begins! To create the fun fold element, I cut another piece of Red Cardstock (from my stash) to 3 1/4″ x 8 1/2″ and scored it at 4 1/4″. I attached this piece to the front of the card, right in the center. This additional fold adds a layer of dimension and intrigue to the card, making it more interactive and engaging for the recipient.

To decorate the fun fold section, I used two more pieces of patterned paper (from my stash) in coordinating designs. I cut one piece to 1″ x 4″ and the other to 2″ x 4″, then adhered them to the fun fold panels. Mixing and matching patterns is one of my favorite ways to bring a card to life, and it’s especially effective on a design like this where different sections of the card are revealed as it’s opened.

Crafting the Focal Point

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show—the beautiful Christmas lantern image from the Heaven And Nature Stamp Set. I stamped this image onto a piece of White Cardstock (from my stash) using Alcohol Marker Friendly Black Ink (from my stash). This is my go-to ink for alcohol marker coloring because it doesn’t bleed and gives a crisp, clean image every time.

I colored the lantern, poinsettias, and cardinal using Alcohol Markers (from my stash). The vibrant colors really make the image pop against the rich background of the card. After coloring, I carefully cut out the image with my paper snips (from my stash) and adhered it to the front of the fun fold section.

Adding the Inside Sentiment

For the inside of the fun fold, I wanted to keep things simple yet festive. I cut a piece of White Cardstock (from my stash) to 3″ x 4″ and stamped a holiday sentiment in red Distress Oxide Ink(from my stash). The warm red ink ties in beautifully with the Cranberry cardstock, creating a cohesive look.

Inside the main card base, I added another piece of  White Cardstock (from my stash), cut to 4″ x 5 1/4″. I stamped the Christmas lantern image again, this time in Light Green Distress Oxide Ink (from my stash), and then stamped the sentiment over it in Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink (from my stash). I love using light-colored inks like Cracked Pistachio for background stamping because they’re subtle enough to write over while still adding a decorative touch.

Finishing Touches

To complete the card, I added a few highlights with a white gel pen (from my stash). These little touches can really bring your colored images to life, adding dimension and a bit of sparkle to your design.
