I thought it would be super fun to mix and match some of my favorite stamp sets to create a fin-tastic Shark Week card! One of my favorite ways to stretch my craft supplies is by combining products from different sets. Not only does it help maximize my stash, but it also encourages me to pull out stamps I haven’t used in a while and discover fresh, creative combinations.
Mixing and matching supplies is an easy way to give your older products new life while creating unique handmade cards that are perfect for any occasion. This playful Shark Week design is proof that a little creativity can turn your existing stash into something fun, unexpected, and guaranteed to bring a smile to someone’s face.
Step 1: Creating The Background
I started this fun ocean background with an A2 white card panel and ink blended three shades of blue over the Casted Net Stencil to create an underwater scene full of depth and texture. The blended background provides the perfect setting for these adorable sea creatures, bringing all the elements together into one cohesive design.
By combining images from multiple stamp sets – Happy Flappy, What The Krill and Mother Puffer – I was able to create a playful Shark Week greeting card that’s full of personality. Mixing supplies not only maximizes your crafting stash, but it also opens the door to endless creative possibilities. Whether you’re making birthday cards, encouragement cards, or just a card to brighten someone’s day, don’t be afraid to look beyond coordinating sets—you may discover your next favorite combination!
Step 2: Create Your Scene
I first stamped, colored, and fussy-cut all of my sea creatures from Happy Flappy, What the Krill, and Mother Puffer stamp sets so I could move each image around and build my underwater scene before committing to any adhesive. Taking this extra step made it easy to add, remove, and rearrange elements until I was happy with the overall composition.
To add even more personality, I stamped the punny sentiment from the Mother Puffer stamp set inside a speech bubble for the adorable puffer fish. It was the perfect finishing touch! And because this is a Shark Week card, I couldn’t resist adding the bold “Yikes” from the Dang, Whoa, Yikes! Word and Shadow Dies. The black die-cut word layered over a vellum shadow creates eye-catching dimension and really pops against the ink-blended ocean background.
Building scenes before gluing everything in place is one of my favorite cardmaking tips. It allows you to balance your design, create movement, and tell a fun story with your stamped images—making every handmade card feel unique.
Step 3: Adding The Fin-tastic Details
Okay, what could be cuter than adding tiny googly eyes to an adorable little crab? I couldn’t help but giggle when I stuck them on—they instantly brought the whole scene to life!
To add even more detail, I used one of my favorite techniques by adding highlights with a white acrylic marker to the Yikes! die cut and several of the sea creatures. These simple accents create extra dimension and make the images pop against the ink-blended ocean background.
To finish the design, I dug through my stash and found the perfect bubble embellishments. Embellishments are a fantastic way to stretch your crafting supplies, use up those treasures you’ve been collecting, and add the perfect whimsical finishing touch to a handmade card. Whether you choose sequins, gems, enamel dots, or themed embellishments like these bubbles, those final details can take your card from cute to fin-tastic!
