Sometimes the best card ideas happen when you give yourself a few creative restrictions—and that is exactly what happened with this Merry Meowmas gatefold card!
For this project, I played along with Craft Roulette as part of my “Joy Takes the Challenge” YouTube series. I love how Craft Roulette takes a few unexpected parameters and turns them into a jumping-off point for creativity. This time, those parameters led me to a Christmas card featuring an adorable cat image, the Merry Meowmas stamp set, and the Cottage Christmas paper pack
And there is a fun little twist: I colored the same stamped image twice!
For the front of the card, I went with non-traditional Christmas colors, while the inside features the same image colored in more traditional holiday colors.
The result is a Christmas card that feels coordinated but still has a surprise waiting inside.
The Craft Roulette Parameters
Here were the parameters I was working with for this week’s challenge:
- Project: Gatefold Card
- Colors: Vacation
- Element: CAS a card from last week’s gallery
- Random: Strips of paper
At first glance, Vacation might not scream Christmas card—but I decided to think about what vacation means to me during the holiday season.
My answer?
A Christmas Market!
I imagined the colors, lights, greenery, and playful atmosphere of wandering through a European Christmas market. That became my inspiration for the color palette and helped me think beyond the traditional red-and-green Christmas combination.
Creating the Gatefold Card
A gatefold card is such a fun card design because it opens like little doors, creating an element of surprise when the recipient opens it.
For this card, I wanted the outside to make a statement without giving away what was inside.
The front features the cute cat image from the Merry Meowmas stamp set, colored in a more unexpected, non-traditional color combination.
The colorful cats immediately make the card feel playful and whimsical.
Then, when the card is opened, the recipient gets a completely different look
One Stamp Set, Two Color Palettes
One of my favorite parts of this project was using the same stamped image twice.
The Front: Non-Traditional Christmas Colors
For the front of the gatefold card, I stepped away from traditional Christmas colors.
The cats are bright, colorful and unexpected, giving the card a cheerful, almost whimsical holiday feel.
I love using non-traditional Christmas colors because they can completely change the personality of a holiday image. Instead of feeling like a traditional Christmas card, this version feels fresh and modern.
And, of course, cats in Christmas trees with colorful ornaments are already pretty adorable!
The Inside: Traditional Christmas Colors
Once the gatefold opens, the color palette changes.
For the inside, I colored the Merry Meowmas image in more traditional Christmas colors, giving the card a warmer and more classic holiday feel.
This was such a simple way to get two completely different looks from one stamp set.
It also makes the inside feel like a little Christmas surprise.
Adding the Cottage Christmas Paper
To bring everything together, I paired the stamped images with the Cottage Christmas paper pack.
The patterned paper adds another layer of holiday detail without competing with the stamped images.
I especially like how patterned paper can do some of the design work for you. Rather than having to create a complicated background, the paper provides color, texture and visual interest while allowing the stamped cats to remain the focal point.
For a handmade Christmas card, this is one of my favorite ways to create a finished look without making the card feel overly complicated.
Turning “Strips of Paper” Into a Design Element
The random parameter for this week’s Craft Roulette challenge was strips of paper.
And this is where I decided to turn a simple challenge requirement into an important part of the card design.
Instead of simply adding random strips of patterned paper, I used paper strips to create sentiment banners.
The sentiment strips help break up the stamped images and add a graphic element to the card.
They also give the eye somewhere to pause among all of those adorable details.
The black sentiment strip on the inside provides a strong contrast against the softer background and helps the “Have a Meowy Christmas” greeting stand out.
Sometimes the simplest challenge parameters can become some of the most useful design elements!
CAS-ing a Card From the Craft Roulette Gallery
The Element parameter was to CAS a card from last week’s gallery.
CAS stands for Clean and Simple, and the idea was to use a previous card as inspiration while creating my own version.
I love this type of challenge because it reminds us that casing isn’t about copying someone else’s card exactly.
Instead, I can look at the original card for inspiration—perhaps the layout, placement, proportions or overall design—and then reinterpret those ideas using my own stamps, colors and supplies.
That’s exactly what I did here.
The resulting gatefold card has its own personality while still incorporating the inspiration from the Craft Roulette gallery.
Why I Love This Gatefold Christmas Card
There are a few things that make this project especially fun.
1. The card has a surprise inside.
The gatefold design naturally creates an element of surprise. The recipient gets one look when they first see the card and another when they open it.
2. The same image looks completely different.
Coloring the Merry Meowmas image twice proves just how much color can change a stamped image.
3. The card combines traditional and non-traditional Christmas styles.
If you can’t decide between classic Christmas colors and something a little more unexpected, why not use both?
4. The challenge parameters actually influenced the design.
Instead of forcing the parameters into the project, I let each one contribute something:
Vacation → Christmas Market inspiration
CAS → layout inspiration from the gallery
Strips of paper → sentiment strips
Gatefold → interactive card design
That is what makes challenge-based card making so much fun!
A Fun Christmas Card Idea for Cat Lovers
If you’re looking for Christmas card ideas for cat lovers, this design would be a great one to try.
The Merry Meowmas image is cute enough to be the star of the card, while the gatefold format makes the finished project feel extra special.
And don’t be afraid to experiment with your coloring.

Final Thoughts
I had so much fun turning this week’s Craft Roulette parameters into a Merry Meowmas gatefold Christmas card.
The biggest takeaway for me was how much personality you can get by simply changing the colors of a stamped image. The non-traditional cats on the front and the traditional Christmas cats inside feel like two different cards—but they work beautifully together.
And I especially love that the “strips of paper” requirement became the sentiment strips rather than just an added embellishment.
That’s one of my favorite things about creative challenges: sometimes a random requirement ends up being the detail that makes the whole project work.
